The term Japonisme is used in Art History when talking about the influence that Japanese art and culture had on late 19th Century Westerners.
Traditional Japanese woodblocks were the inspiration behind the innovative new styles of artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Gogh, Klimt and Mary Cassatt.
Impressionism, and later Art Nouveau and Cubism, are all derived from the influence of traditional Japanese prints.
How Old World Japanese (and as is the case here; Korean) influence translates into modern fashion can be seen with the use of origami-like folds, bold use of color and print blocking combined with subtle textures to create sculptural, head to toe silhouettes.
